		<title>Is Persecution Normal?</title>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently I read one of the most thought-provoking and spiritually challenging books I&#8217;ve read in a long time, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Insanity of God.</span> Written by Nik Ripken (a pseudonym) with Gregg Lewis, this book chronicles the experience of Nik, a missionary who served in Somalia and later spent time visiting believers in settings of great persecution around the world.  I won&#8217;t ruin it by sharing all of the stories, but I do want to share some of the lessons I believe the Lord is trying to teach his church today through these authors.</p>
<p>In the book, Ripken and Lewis share the compelling stories of believers who have lived through persecution for their faith.  Despite great hardship, these believers and their churches seem to thrive in a way our American church can hardly relate to.  It leads one to think Jesus really meant it when he said, &#8220;Blessed are you when you are persecuted.&#8221;  These believers see God move in ways that seem to come straight from the Book of Acts.</p>
<p>Our usual inclination when we hear of persecution is to resist it, to fight against it and to try to stop it.  We feel like persecution is abnormal and that we should pray that God will remove it. However, in his travels, Nik has come to the conclusion that &#8220;the primary cause of &#8216;religious persecution&#8217; in the world today is people surrendering their hearts and lives to Jesus.&#8221; If he is right and that is true, it has great implications for us and our faith.  It means that our obedience to Christ to go and make disciples will lead to increased persecution. Persecution is the normal consequence of our obedience.   Could it be that those of us who experience little persecution may not be much of a threat to the enemy?  If we are not making disciples, there is no reason for the enemy to bother with us. When we put our own reputation, comfort or safety ahead of sharing Christ, we miss the purpose God has for his church.  &#8221;Believers who do not share their faith aid and abet Satan&#8217;s ultimate goal of denying others access to Jesus.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe avoiding persecution should not be our highest goal.  &#8221;If our goal is reducing persecution, that task is easily achieved.  First, just leave Jesus alone. Second if you do happen to find him, just keep him to yourself. Persecution stops immediately where there is no faith and here there is no witness. The reason for persecution, then, is that people keep finding Jesus &#8211; and, then, they refuse to keep Him to themselves.&#8221;</p>
<p>When believers are obedient and the church is growing, there is often persecution. In his travels, Ripken has learned much about the effect of persecution on devoted followers of Jesus. &#8220;I understand that one of the most accurate ways to detect and measure the activity of God is to note the amount of oppression that is present. The stronger the persecution, the more significant the spiritual vitality of the believers.&#8221;</p>
<p>The point is not to seek persecution for persecution&#8217;s sake or to stop working for justice in the world.  The point is to realize that Jesus meant it when he commanded us to go and make disciples.   And he told us that it  would lead to persecution.  The promise for us in that persecution is that he will be there with us.  And that is how we should pray for our brothers and sisters enduring persecution in the world today. Pray that they would remain faithful and know the presence of the Lord continually, even in their suffering.  And for ourselves, let us pray that we will be faithful witnesses. Let us be willing to share Jesus across the street and around the world, even in the &#8220;hard places&#8221;. And when that leads to opposition, as it invariably will, let us also walk in faith, knowing that as we obey, the Lord is with us, too.</p>

<p>It was the final time of prayer and worship ending our week of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) training in Owerri, Nigeria.  As I looked over the scene, I was overwhelmed with what I was seeing. People passionately worshiping, praying, singing, and dancing joyfully before the Lord.  They were singing a song in the local language, Igbo, which translates as &#8220;the Lord has done well.&#8221; Indeed the Lord had done very well that week.  Although we had come to give training in principles and skills that they can use to make disciples in their area, the Lord did so much more. Knowledge was imparted, but more importantly, hearts were touched.</p>

<p>What we saw was so far above what we had expected and hoped that I knew without a doubt it was all the work of the Lord. I was refreshed and encouraged in my own Spirit as I saw him work so powerfully.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I will be leaving Tuesday morning May 7<sup>th</sup> @ 4:00a.m to help lead a team of 17 on a mission trip to Trinidad.  We will be leading the girls soccer team from Asbury on this mission trip to Trinidad.</p>
<p>I wanted to pass along a few prayer requests for the trip.</p>
<ol>
<li>The dates of the trip are May 7-15, 2013.</li>
<li>Pray for all our connecting flights.  (Lex to Chicago,  Chicago to Houston &amp; Houston to Pt. of Spain in Trinidad)  With all of the Government cuts in air traffic control, there is some concern about making flight connections.</li>
<li>Pray for Bob Stanko, Linsay Ward and myself as we lead the team.</li>
<li>Pray that God will work in and through the girls soccer team from Asbury University on this trip.</li>
<li>Pray for me as I speak at a Leadership conference for Pastors while I’m on the Island.</li>
<li>Pray for me as I will have a heavy speaking load of preaching and teaching every day with the team.  Pray that I will teach with clarity what the Lord wants me to teach &amp; preach.</li>
<li>Pray for my family while I’m gone. (Cheryl, Joshua, Allyson &amp; Aaron)</li>
<li>Pray for divine appointments as we are taking Bibles with us for Bible distribution.</li>
<li>Pray for good weather so that we will be able to do the outreach and soccer camps that we have planned.</li>
<li>Pray that God will be glorified as GO and help fulfill the Great Commission.</li>
</ol>
<p>I will be posting pictures and updates each day on Facebook if you want to keep up with our team.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have heard the saying, “death is no respecter of age,” several times, but never has this statement rang truer nor did I understand it until “death” took my dear friend, Josias Rodriguez last Saturday, way too early.  Hence I could say with assurance, “death is no respecter of age.”</p>
<p>I met Josias 2months ago when we went on The Great Spring Break Trip to Trinidad. We had 4 team leaders, me, 22 Absury University students, and 6 Ohio Christian University students, which made all of us worry if we would be able to become one unified team.  But we soon saw that God had orchestrated this team and each person who came on this trip was exactly who was supposed to be there and we became more than a team, we became a family.</p>
<p>And Josias Rodriguez was our brother.</p>
<p>From day one we saw that Josias had a heart of gold, had an infectious smile, and was the best photo bomber we had ever seen.</p>
<p>But more than that we saw that Josias was 100% for Jesus.</p>
<p>Everything he did, he did it to glorify God, whether it was getting up at 6 in the morning to spend quiet time with Jesus or ministering to Ainsley at the Old Age Home in Trinidad, Josias’ faith was at the center of his being.</p>
<p>“Josias was honestly one of the best men I knew! His love and heart for life and God was incredible! I strive to be more like Josias,” Casie Zimmerman, a student from Ohio Christian who went on the trip, said.</p>
<p>Paige Heiple, another team member said, “He was always just happy to be alive, and he lived his life fully for Christ,” and Brady Parks who was Josias’ roommate in Trinidad said, “He was a faithful man and brother and friend.”</p>
<p>As you can see, it was obvious to all of us that Josias left a vibrant and beautiful testimony and we know without a doubt that he is now in Heaven singing with the angels.  His life and death has impacted many of us greatly.  We are hurting and we don’t understand, but I am comforted by Josias’ mother’s words that she spoke at his memorial service at Ohio Christian.  She challenged us to use Josias’ death as a catalyst to live our lives to the fullest for Christ, just as Josias did.  It is my prayer that we take that challenge to heart and live as Josias did, 100% for Christ.  Please continue to be praying for Josias’ family and friends that God will give them peace and comfort in the days to come.  As I finish writing this tribute, I feel it is only fitting that I finish with Josias’ words on what God meant to him.  May you read them and apply them to your life as Josias Rodriguez did.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As I got to my office this morning I realized that I had forgot my Anniversary yesterday.  Not my wedding anniversary&#8211; that&#8217;s not until August 5th.  But my Anniversary here at GO InterNational.  It was May 1st 2007 that I came back to Wilmore and became the 3rd President of GO InterNational.</p>
<p>Yesterday was the start of my 7th year here leading GO InterNational.  I was reflecting on some of the things that have happened in the past 6 years.  Here are some of the highlights:</p>
<p>1.  We became an official on Campus Ministry at Asbury University.</p>
<p>2.  We launched the GO Institute for International leadership.  (which we have had over 70 interns come through the program since 2007)</p>
<p>3.  We have added international partnerships in Russia, India, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Nepal and Colombia.</p>
<p>4.  We have added new staff and volunteers to the ministry of GO.</p>
<p>5.  We have launched social media as a means of marketing our ministry and updated our web sites and online giving capacity.</p>
<p>6.  We have added a Director of Medical missions and launched a Community Health Evangelism program.</p>
<p>7.  We have added Member Care ministries  (see our web site)</p>
<p>8.  We have formed strategic ministry partnerships with groups like:  Missio Nexus, CMDA, Barnabas International, Better life ministries and more</p>
<p>9.   We published &#8220;Leadership Proverbs&#8221; with Dr. David Stevens &amp; the CMDA.</p>
<p>10.  We launched a &#8220;homeland&#8221; missions department and have linked with groups like the Erie City Mission and other disaster struck areas across the Country.</p>
<p>11.  We have focused on Bible distribution, Church planting and team ministry.</p>
<p>12.  We launched the &#8220;Cochran Center for International Pastoral training.&#8221;  Which is focusing on training Pastors around the globe.</p>
<p>13.  We have upgraded and remodeled our headquarters here in Wilmore.</p>
<p>14.  We have raised money for partners and projects that are making a difference in the lives of people around the globe.</p>
<p>These are just a few of the things that God has been doing through GO in the last 6 years.  We are so thankful for His blessings and faithfulness.  He has sustained us and we give God all the credit and glory.  We are also very thankful to all the individuals and churches that have stood beside us in ministry.  We value your prayers and support for the ministry of GO InterNational.</p>
<p>I believe year #7 is going to be BIG for GO.  I can&#8217;t wait to write this blog a year from now and let you know all that God accomplishes in this coming year.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Spring and summer are usually the busiest time of year for Bert, and this year is shaping up to be no exception.  He recently returned from the “Great Spring Break” trip to Trinidad with Joshua and Allyson and some students from Asbury University and Ohio Christian University.  He is heading back to Trinidad again May 7-15, leading the Asbury University woman’s soccer team.  He is also preparing to speak at 4 different camp meetings this summer.  Bert has been spending a lot of time on Asbury’s campus working with students and teaching leadership classes this last semester.  It has been a great way to connect with student leaders and recruit interns for the GO Institute for International leadership.  (a leadership development program at GO that has had 70 students since 2007)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>He has also had a unique opportunity, working with several companies providing leadership training for them.  As usual, the staff at GO is working hard to develop more partners as well as bringing more people on staff at GO international.  Bert is excited about connecting with the Francis Asbury Society as a covenant evangelist. The purpose of Francis Asbury Society is to spread the message of Scriptural Holiness around the world.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Jones family has an exciting opportunity to travel to Kenya the first week in December, as Bert will be preaching at the African Gospel Church Annual Conference where they are expecting 2,000 people to be present.  Please be praying for Bert and his family as they prepare and raise the funds for this trip.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Cheryl as usual is not only keeping up with the Joneses but also making sure that the Joneses keep going to where they are scheduled. She is enjoying her job at The Early Learning Village as kindergarten instructional assistant as well as her new position as an interventional teacher.   She is thankful for a year without anyone graduating as that will change next year when Josh will graduate from Asbury University.  Cheryl is looking forward to the summer and is hoping to participate in the Erie City Rescue Missions’ Art and Sports camp in July as well as traveling with Bert to some of the camp meetings.  Please be praying for Cheryl as she juggles being a mother to 3 very active kids and the wife of an evangelist as well as working at The Early Learning Village and keeping her family happy and healthy.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Josh is finishing up his junior year at Asbury and has some exciting activities ahead.  His major is media communications, with an emphasis in audio.  Josh has enjoyed hosting a radio program this year on Thursday nights on WACW, the official Asbury Radio station.  They had quite a following to their weekly call in radio show that aired on the Internet each week.  He recently had an amazing opportunity to participate with a friend on a movie in which he was the sound designer.   This film was accepted into The Highbridge Film Festival, which is a very high honor for an Asbury student.  It was on a “media comm. high” for him to see his name at the end credits of the film.  Josh is also waiting to hear if he was chosen to work at the Winter Olympics in Russia next year.  Asbury students are the only students invited to participate for this honor.  Josh being a senior next year has a very good chance and will hear the verdict this summer.  He is also gearing up for an internship in Nashville next semester where he will expand and perfect his passion in audio.  As for the summer he is hoping to find a job to get some cash for all of the awesome things he has in planned.  Be praying for Josh in this season in his life as he participates in these opportunities and begins to think about what comes after graduating.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Allyson is just completing her freshman year at Ohio Christian University, and she has really enjoyed her experience at OCU.  She worked in the Admissions office on campus and really loved meeting and welcoming new students as they came on campus.    Allyson recently participated on the mission trip to Trinidad and was thrilled that she got to experience the trip with her dad, brother, and cousin.  Not only was her time in Trinidad amazing, but also during that trip God reaffirmed her calling to be a teacher and work with children.  Allyson is studying early childhood education, hoping to teach overseas after she graduates.   In Trinidad she taught all of the lessons each day during Bible school to the children.  She absolutely loved this opportunity.  Allyson has some fun events coming her way this summer, as she will be traveling with a group of OCU students ministering in different churches and camp meetings.  She will also serve as an intern at Erie Rescue Mission in June and July.  She will return to OCU in the fall for her sophomore year, where she will be a small group leader for some of the girls on her hall. Be praying for Allyson as she continues her college career and pursues God’s will for her life.</p>

<p>Aaron is finishing up his freshman year at BUAC and is “studying like a boss,” for finals.  He is ready for summer so he can have some chill time.  Next week, Aaron will participate in his first school musical production called &#8220;West Side Story.”  He is planning on going to a lot of concerts and participating in the mission trip with the Erie City Rescue Mission with his mom and sister.  In June he will turn 15 and is excited that he will be that much closer to getting his driver’s permit.  Aaron continues to get taller and has set his sight on being the tallest member of the Jones family.  He has already passed Josh, Allyson and Cheryl in height and is running in second place to his dad.  Aaron loves to read and will be spending most of his summer in the pool or with a book in his hand.  Be praying for Aaron as he has his summer adventures and as he continues his high school years in the fall.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you have never taken the Perspectives course on World Missions&#8211; I highly recommend it.  I took the course several years ago and it was so helpful in my understanding of World Missions.  Check out www.perspectives.org to see where there is a class being offered near you.  If there is not a class being offered in your area&#8211; you can also take the class online.  (That&#8217;s the way I took the course because I travel so much.  It was a great way for me to take the course on the road)</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be teaching lesson 14 this Sunday on the campus of University of Kentucky.  The lesson is on Church Planting and reaching the Peoples of the world.  This is the 3rd lesson that I have taught in the Perspectives Course.   I also teach lesson #4 and Lesson #15 in the course.  If you are hosting a perspectives course in your area and need a speaker on one of these areas&#8211; email me at ceo@gointernational.org</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is a question that I have never had to ponder.  I grew up in a Christian home and the scriptures were always within reach and many times I have taken this lightly and for granted.  In Trinidad this question I just posed is a reality.</p>
<p>In March I had the privilege and honor to participate on GO&#8217;s Great Spring Break Trip, where we traveled to Trinidad to minister to the people.  What I expected to see was extreme poverty and hopelessness, while there was some of that, what surprised me the most was how much hope I saw in the Trinidadian Christians.  Most of these Christians have been converted from Hinduism or Islam; therefore they feel set free and crave to know Jesus so much more, that it would put most Christians in America to shame.   Unfortunately everything was very expensive in this little country.  In Trinidad it was $6 to our American $1, making Bibles out of reach for most Trini’s.</p>
<p>When I realized this, God pricked my heart, causing me to see that He intended for every one of His children to read His love letter, and I wanted to help these precious people somehow.  Trinidad is unique in the sense that for several years they were ruled by the British government, so much of their customs today are of British influence.  Because of this, the Bible preference of Trinidad is the King James Version.  Ironically, this is also the preference of my home church in Ohio.</p>
<p>When I returned home I explained to my church the situation in Trinidad and their need for Bibles and for the last month we have had a Bible drive. Thankfully, God put the same passion for the Trinidadian people in my church family’s heart, and so far we have gathered 137 Bibles, with no plans of stopping.</p>
<p>God has opened up the doors for me to return in May with another team at GO to administer the Bibles.  I am so excited to be able to hand these Bibles to people in Trinidad and see the joy in their faces as they receive their very own copy of the scriptures.</p>
<p>I challenge you to join forces with us at GO as we work to provide Bibles for Trinidad by mailing Bibles to our headquarters or simply sending donations with“Bibles” in the memo.  As always, we thank you for your prayers and support and we look forward to continue to share with you what God is doing in Trinidad.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since August I have been privileged to be the staff writer for GO InterNational.  With this job, I have been able to do something  I love to do and that is telling stories.  And not just any stories, but stories of Christ&#8217;s love, stories of what God has been doing around the world, and stories of people perusing their passion, while fulfilling The Great Commission.</p>
<p>When I got to thinking about the prospect of telling stories, I had a profound thought:  Jesus loved to tell stories.  Anytime He could, he would share a parable with people that taught them of God&#8217;s love.  To this day, Jesus is still the best storyteller, touching people&#8217;s lives with stories He told 2,000 years ago.</p>
<p>As Christians, we are supposed to model our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Master Storyteller.  You might think that you don&#8217;t have a story to tell, but you do.  Everyone has a story, that Jesus himself is writing.  Let Him hold the pen and write the pages of your story.  There will be times you&#8217;ll want to erase a part of your story or there might be twists and turns you never expected and you just don&#8217;t know what the next chapter should be.  When that happens all you need to do is look to Jesus, The Greatest Storyteller of all.</p>
