GO InterNational partner Jorge Ramirez and I met Dr. Sergio Miranda four years ago when we travelled to San Juanito to meet with him in preparation for an upcoming medical mission team. We were going to be working in a remote village and wanted cooperation from the local health center. Dr. Miranda was overseeing 16 remote clinics for the district hospital. We had breakfast with Dr. Miranda. He seemed quiet and reserved. He mentioned during our conversation that his parents were Christian, but said little about his own faith. He was interested in our mission and gave his blessing for us to work in the village of Guacayvo where a nurse, Ofelia, staffed the health center. We travelled to 2 hours on some pretty rugged roads to accomplish the 15-mile trip to Guacayvo with Ofelia to check out the setting. On the ride back to San Juanito, Jorge shared the Gospel with Ofelia. I still remember her tears as we sat in the car having arrived back in San Juanito while prayed to accept Christ. Two months later we came with the team and served together with Ofelia and Dr. Miranda in Guacayvo. During that visit, Dr. Miranda recommitted his life to Christ. Little did we know at that time that several events including an outbreak of drug-gang violence in Guacayvo would prevent us from returning. I wondered about the long-term fruit of our time there. However, Jorge has been faithful in following up with Dr. Miranda since our visit. He has been discipling, encouraging and visiting him whenever possible. And Dr. Miranda has continued to walk with Christ.
I recently travelled back to San Juanito with Jorge to meet with Dr. Miranda and Ofelia. It was so amazing to see Dr. Miranda’s bright smile, something we hadn’t seen four years ago. He and Ofelia are both serving the Lord in San Juanito. Dr. Miranda has been leading Bible studies for doctors, nurses and others at the hospital. In the last couple of months six have committed their life to Christ. We met with about 50 people to share our vision of Community Health Evangelism. They are so excited to reach the villages where they work for Christ. We discussed the next steps including the need for further training called TOT 1 to really establish the program. They are ready to start immediately. While this is very exciting, the most exciting thing is the change that is so apparent in Dr. Miranda’s life. There is evident fruit in his life as a result of his faith. He is hungry to learn more and was excited to have me and Jorge come to share with him. However the truth is, I can learn from him, especially in his desire to grow and to reach those around him with the gospel.
Although it has been a long time since we were there, the door is now wide-open through Dr. Miranda and his team to reach many Tarahumara villages for Christ through CHE. Please continue to pray for Dr. Miranda and the other Christian doctors and nurses we met. Pray that they would continue to grow in Christ and continue to desire to reach out to the poor and needy around them. To God be the glory!
